Nestled in the heart of West Berkshire, the market town of Newbury is a must visit destination. Only an hour by train from London, Oxford and Bristol this dynamic gem is surrounded by the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The riverside town boasts many cultural attractions, it’s well known arts venues, the Corn Exchange, Watermill Theatre and The Base are popular with locals and visitors and host the very best in theatre, comedy and entertainment. No visit would be complete without a visit to Highclere Castle, home of Downton Abbey and Highclere Castle gin, which is available to sample and purchase at the Contemporary Art Fair (the gin, not the Castle).
Make time in your Art day to enjoy a warm meal at the Paddock Kitchen on the first floor, serving delicious daily specials of homemade soup, baked potatoes or dish of the day. Alternatively the ground floor Coffee Yard provides sandwiches, paninis, snacks and hot drinks.
If you are staying over in Newbury, you will be pleased to know the area has some of the best fine-dining and gastro cuisine in Berkshire. From multi-award-winning pubs and restaurants featured in the Michelin Guide, to quaint tea rooms and cafés.
Here are some of our favourites for an evening dinner:
For real foodies The Vineyard is a 5-star hotel and spa, renowned for its impeccable service, 3 AA Rosette restaurant and award winning 30,000 bottle wine cellar. The Vineyard hotel is located in Stockcross, perfect for those that want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
The Crown and Garter, Inkpen offers delicious seasonal menus in a picturesque country setting. The meat and produce is ethically and locally sourced where possible and they even have their own bakery!
The Yew Tree Inn is a delightful 17th century pub with excellent dining and quirky interior, situated in the lovely English countryside, moments from Highclere Castle. Only 15 minutes from Newbury, it has built a reputation within the local community and further afield for its high standard of food and service.
The Dolphin – a pub with stylish mid-century rooms is grown-up, glamorous and fun with very cool art work adorning the walls. The modern British menu comes highly recommended and you can even host a private party in one of their garden beach huts.
A 30 minute train or car journey from the Fair is the Dundas Arms, Kintbury, where you can enjoy a scenic and luxurious country stay, nestled between the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon canal. They serve real ales, classic pub dishes and locally-sourced menus crafted from quality ingredients.
