Emerald Seas is inspired by the colours found around the coastline of Devon and Cornwall. In shallow water the sea becomes a mixture of emeralds and blues; contrasting with the deep indigo blue of the sea. This painting is part of series looking at the play of light on water. Above all I am intrigued the patterns created when sunlight hits the shallow water creating a dance of light and shadow with blue, turquoise, green and indigo ripples.
This is one in a new series of paintings examining the play of light. I am interested in the way the sunlight hits the water. This creates movement and a play light. I like to examine the constant colour changes. For example, the shallow water can vary from the palest blue almost turquoise, to emerald green turning to a deep indigo blue.
I aim to make the viewer to feel a certain amount of escapism when looking this painting. But also give an immersive experience.
The versatility of oil paint makes it an ideal medium to work with. For example, I can layer the paint in glazes to give translucency to a painting. In addition, it is such robust a medium that I can scrape the paint back and scratch into it too.
As a Teignmouth based artist I am close to the south west coast and Dartmoor. Both of which both influence my work.
I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth.
I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and I gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy.
I am a member of the Devon Artist Network. More recently I have been given the status of an Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
